Trevor Kronbauer is going to build me a demo guitar from this set of quilted bubinga. 
Any suggestions for binding and purfling? My sense is that we need to use something dark and fairly tame considering the figure and colors of the wood, but other than "good old rosewood" I don't really have any good ideas. Thanks, Andrew Wright |

I am building one and I like ebony with red. The black makes a great contrast and the red helps pull the color together john hall |

I think any bindings with figure would put your senses on overload. That's some outrageous Bubinga. What color are the sides? Dark like the center...or light like the outer edges? If you have light sides, I'd go for something that picks up that darker red/brown in the center of the back. It would contrast with the light sections, and complement the center. Cocobolo might look nice. Or just the right shade of Brazilian. This is the fun part. Enjoy! Steve |

[/QUOTE] Andrew, I would agree with your aesthetic sense. Ebony would give it a dramatic contrast. But if you wanted a softer contrast, while still maintaining a clear dilineation between the tonewood and the binding, I think bloodwood would also work well. That bubinga is amazing! Can't wait to see the finished instrument. Best, Michael |

That would depend on what the sides look like and the size of the guitar. Depending upon the color and size of the sides, you might want to try and use cutoffs for the binding. |

No expert yet and it's just what popped into my head and thought either walnut or EIR bindings although ebony would certainly be a sure bet! |

Wow! That's some serious zoot! I'm in the dark binding camp. Ebony would look great. EIR too. And still, the idea of snakewood on there is also appealing... |

Here are two I did last year - first up is ziricote with blk/orange/blk, next one is dark braz with the same purf.

ziricote is very cool to use as binding - it bends and sands well, and the BEST - NO PORES to fill 
Just got a sweet board the other day - binding , headplates or rosette pieces, plus a couple side sets and a 4 pc back !!!! SWEEEEEETTTTT |

Tony have you used ziricote for bridge or fretboards? I have tons of it to cut up for that use as well as bindings. |

Thanks for the excellent input. After giving it some more thought, I think I'm going to go away from the ebony/red combination. It would be striking, but after seeing the Charles Fox Ergo guitar I think he's kinda taken over those colors in my mind. I'm liking the brazilian rosewood/walnut/wenge/ziricote options. I think brown would provide contrast and accent without the sharp contrast of black. As for purfling, still some thinking to do. Has anyone ever used a super thin strip of pearl? Just enough to give it sparkle at the right angle but not the over-the-top gaudiness of D-45 style purfling. Here is a pic with the sides: 
For whatever it's worth, here's the other set I bought at the same time. I'll save it in my reserve for some buyer to select for a future instrument.

Now that is some nice looking wood! I am currently putting one together with figured bubinga and am using ebony for binding, fretboard, and bridge. I happen to like the look of the ebony but you choice will look great. Philip |
